We have been exploring the connection between our voice and the chakras during the past weeks. This week, it is the turn of singing with the third eye chakra.
The third eye chakra is one of our higher energy centers. It is situated in between our eyes, and it is associated with the pineal gland. Its related color is indigo.
This center is strongly related to the capacity of vision. This includes not only the physical capacity of seeing but also the ability to visualize with our mind. The energy of this chakra is manifest in imagination, clarity of vision, understanding and contemplation.
When the third eye (or ajna) chakra is balanced, we can see the bigger picture. We have an open mind. We start perceiving what there is beyond our physical self. We are able to set goals for ourselves and make a plan to achieve them. We can visualize where and what we want to be and make it happen. Both hemispheres of our brain are connected and work in harmony (logical thinking and creativity), and we can see how to use our creativity in practical ways. We are alert and aware of the world around us. We integrate all the planes of ourselves, instead of being too attached to our ego. We perceive the union and totality between all beings, instead of being limited by things like culture or different ways of thinking.
We can see clearly what there is and what we want, instead of seeing things that are not real.
As mentioned in earlier blog posts, no chakra is better than others. In order for the third eye chakra to work properly, we must have balance in our lower chakras. For the third eye chakra to serve us we must also be grounded, otherwise we can have problems such as “seeing” things that are not reality, or even encounter mental issues.

When the third eye chakra is blocked, we can experience things like:
As with all the other chakras that we have explored, the connection of the third eye chakra with our voice is quite strong and it can affect it greatly, for good and for bad.
When we sing, visualizing is an important tool, both in interpretation and in technique. When we are interpreting a piece, first we visualize and connect with the message that we want to express. When we visualize it or imagine it, the emotion appears by itself, making the message clear and adjusting the vocal technique to what we want to express. When we speak, we don’t think much of how to adjust our voice to let our message out clearly. The emotion drives it. So, for example, when we are angry our voice becomes more powerful, when we are happy our voice sounds higher and energetic, etc.
When we sing we can achieve the same results, making the most of our currently available voice tools, if we visualize and connect that same way with a specific situation or message of the song.
Also, a very important tool for singers is the ability to be “open-minded” and nonjudgemental. When we sing we express emotions, and an understanding of them will allow us to sing whatever style and song we want with connection. There is a part of us that connects with the message and emotion of most songs, but we need to be open-minded to be able to find that connection and use it in our interpretation of the song.
There are many things you can do to improve your singing by singing with the third eye chakra. Some of them are:
