We keep on exploring the connection between the chakras and our voice. This week we are exploring singing with the solar plexus. While the sacral chakra is associated with the creation and enjoyment of things in life without guilt, the solar plexus chakra goes further into the shaping of our ego, our personality, our sense of self.
These days the word ego is often misinterpreted as something negative, but it is actually something that is healthy to develop. In a balanced way, of course. In fact, when the ego is not strong enough we can have several problems, such as lack of self-esteem, lack of self-confidence, too much shyness, feelings of being powerless, being too insecure, lack of assertiveness, incapacity so set healthy boundaries to the people around us, etc.
Of course, when the solar plexus chakra is overactive this can lead to other problems such as egotism, addictions, being manipulative, being a “bully”, aggressiveness, etc.
As in most things in life, we want this center balanced and healthy. When the solar plexus chakra is healthy, we learn to be independent and confident, we have the fire we need to achieve our goals in life. We have the capacity to make good decisions for ourselves. We develop our personality and our capacity to use logic, reason, and critical thinking. We are aligned with our purposes in life.
The solar plexus chakra is developed between the ages of 8 and 12 years old. When at this stage of development children are not able to express their own opinions, or to make any of their own choices, this center doesn’t develop properly.
The solar plexus chakra is located in the area where the diaphragm sits. When the diaphragm is free and healthy, we can use it to breathe in a way that facilitates our singing more effectively.
When we breathe with a healthy diaphragm, the air can go low and deep into our lungs, filling us with more air, but without tensing the area of the chest and neck. When our diaphragm is too stiff, we find it hard to breathe using it, and so we tend to use our chest instead, raising our shoulders. This causes tension in the neck, which makes it really hard for us to produce sound in an effective and liberating way.
Because the solar plexus relates so much to our confidence, when this center is blocked it leads to increased nervousness when singing or speaking in public. This makes the experience less enjoyable and our voice is likely to be weaker because of this. This can affect us whether we are speaking to large or small crowds, and also affects the shaping of our voice. When we feel more confident in our individuality we feel freer to let our voice come out with its own unique characteristics.
In singing, this means that we are able to create our own style, not copying anyone but feeling safe and confident in our individuality. This way we can really contribute something with our voice since we are all special and unique. Nobody in the world will be better than you at being yourself!
When we are confident to explore our own truth, our own story, our own individuality, and personality, this greatly enriches the qualities of our unique voice. Sometimes it is tempting to just agree with what the masses say in order to be more likable. But it is really valuable to instead find what really resonates with us, form our own ideas, and honor them.
There are many things you can do to improve the health of your solar plexus chakra. Some of them are:
