Over the last six weeks we have explored the connection between our voice and our major seven chakras. This week we look at the last one of our series: Singing with the crown chakra.
If you missed the other posts in this chakra series, you can find them here:
The crown chakra is situated at the top of the head. Its associated gland is the pituitary gland. Its colours are deep purple and white. Some people also relate it with the gold colour.
The pituitary gland is believed to help organize and regulate the whole endocrine system and our natural cycles. Therefore, the correct balance of the crown chakra will have an impact on all the other chakras as well. Some people call it “the master gland”, for all the processes that it controls.
Since this chakra is situated in the top of the head, it is also associated with the brain and the nervous system – which also affects the rest of our body.
This energy centre is strongly related to our spirituality. Our capacity to perceive the unity and connection with all other things. It allows us to sense and understand the deeper meaning of life, beyond our ego.
It is also associated to the capacity to be present, and with connection and communication with higher consciousness. The communication between our personal lives, and what is beyond that. Some people also believe it to be the channel through which we communicate with our higher self. Therefore, it could be its job to give us clarity in regard to our true purposes in life.
In Reiki therapy, it is the place where the universal energy enters us before being channelled through our hands.
It is important to note that for this centre to be balanced, all the other centres have to work in harmony too. Nowadays it is very common to focus solely in the higher chakras, causing disconnection with our physical body, in an attempt to gain “enlightenment”. This of course causes a big imbalance in our lives, since it takes us out of reality. Not to mention the potential harm that can come from an overactive mind that doesn’t recognize the needs of the body to function properly… damaging not only the body, but also the mind itself, since we are indeed connected to ourselves as well as to other beings. How could we really feel the connection with others if we don’t feel our own? How can we love others if we don’t love ourselves and accept our physicality? And how can we achieve success in the accomplishment of our life purposes -including the spiritual ones- if we fail to take care of our material needs, that in turn allow us to be able to function properly to achieve those purposes.
In a similar way, when the imbalance is on the other side (being too attached to the material world), we lack the clarity to direct our actions towards our true purposes, causing boredom and no satisfaction or true happiness.
Having a strong balanced crown chakra, will allow you to be open to the divine while being grounded at the same time.
As mentioned before, the crown chakra is associate with the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland, in turn, help regulate all the other glands, all of which have a strong impact on the voice, as we have discussed in the previous posts of this series, particularly the sexual glands, which determine strongly the tone of our voice.
For people that believe in the law of attraction, one of the things they consider is that their words have the power of manifesting and attracting things into their lives. Some people even use sung mantras to attract what they want. Better to have clarity about what you really want!
Singing with the crown chakra, with its capacity of letting us be present, will allow us to process emotions in ways that serve us without getting stuck in them.
When we sing, this is a very important tool. It is said that being in the future means anxiety, something that not only singers but also anybody who needs to deliver an important message (public speaking, or just an important chat that means something important to you), can relate too. Anxiety affects the voice in many ways, in particular it shortens the breath, which is the fuel of our voice, and takes away the diaphragmatic support that we need to control our voice.
Being present with the message that we want to deliver when singing a song (or in a speaking situation), gives us clarity in the message, which is translated as a powerful and credible interpretation. This in large part organizes our vocal technique by itself.
Singing requires empathy. Empathy to understand from within the emotion that the author impressed in the song you are singing, and to be one with it. Empathy to make it your own, and to express it to the world without judgement. The crown chakra and the heart chakra give you this empathy when they are balanced. The heart chakra by opening yourself to love unconditionally, and the crown chakra to understand that we are all indeed connected in some way.
When our energy is too concentrated on our mind, and we lose connection with our body, the sung voice loses power, support, and the ability to work with the right voice muscles. In this way, we are going to end up forcing our voice, causing it to become weaker and weaker over time. By being grounded, we allow our neck to relax and our voice can work properly with all its resonators available for a strong, powerful sound at the service of your expression.
There are many things you can do to help balance your energy for better singing with the crown chakra.
