Learning to sing is a safe activity that can be enjoyed at any age. Today I want to talk a little more about singing for little kids.
Many times parents ask me if their child is too young to sing. The short answer is no, but the long answer needs to consider more than one aspect.
Firstly, you are never too young (or too old!) to enjoy music. Music has plenty of proven benefits for people of all ages. Certain parts of the brain that have to do with recognising pitch and rhythm are developed at a very early age. That is why so many times I have beginner adult students in their 30, 40, 50, that can sing perfectly in tune and with good rhythm with no previous singing training, but they did piano lessons at a young age, and those skills were developed.
Learning music and singing for little kids is not only useful for them in regards to all the music skills they will develop. Learning music has other benefits that will help your child thrive during their whole life. Some examples are:
So if you want to do your young child a favour, help them be surrounded by music! Not only kids’ music, but as many music genres as you can. And if they can’t stop singing around the house, they can be benefited by taking singing lessons for little kids.
At Auckland Contemporary Singing School we have a special program for kids aged 4-7 that helps children establish strong foundations not only in the areas of vocal technique but also musicality. All done with fun games and songs, so they don’t even notice that they are learning important stuff!
Singing lessons for little kids are specifically designed for your child to learn the basics of singing and music in a friendly, safe, non-stressful environment.
Through songs and fun exercises, your child will progressively develop the following skills:
A little more info about it? keep on reading!
During our Level 1 program for kids, your child will develop the following skills related to ear training:
Every lesson the parent or tutor will be given the activities of the week. Homework can be fun! You will be able to connect with your child while having fun and helping them develop not only the skill of music and singing but also the skill of practicing and discipline – which will be helpful for any skill your child might want to develop in the future.
Our practice sessions for little kids are not boring 1-hour vocalising practices. No! Always through games and fun activities, your child will get progressively better and better at singing… and you too! Our practices can be completed in as little as 10 minutes a day, or a bit longer if you have the time. Short enough so you can fit them into your busy day, but long enough that the kid effectively progresses day after day.
Some feedback from a grateful parent:
“Just wanted to send a quick note to say how thrilled I am with our little girl’s singing progress. It has been so much more than I was expecting! I asked her to sing a few things for me yesterday and was just stunned at the control she has on her pitch and the projection she was getting. The concentration required is also a good thing for her!” (Andrew)
So yes, singing for little kids is a skill that will greatly benefit them at many levels, but as you can see is not something done the same way for different ages. The program mentioned above is specifically designed for kids 4-7 years old. At this age, kids learn quickly and they are open to doing “silly” things with their voices and movements without the fear of being embarrassed. The capacity of play that kids have is a great aid to their music learning.
At Auckland Contemporary Singing School the singing programs for little kids are organised in one on one lessons at the moment, and programs run in school terms. If you would like to give your child an experience that will benefit them for life, get started today!
