This week I bring you something I have been working on for you!
Singing high notes is one of the obstacles we find when we start training singing. Let me tell you something I discovered through the years:
1- Everyone has a ‘hidden’ high voice ready to be unlock. It is just a matter to send the right signals from your brain!
If you are ready to unlock those higher notes and be able to sing your favorite songs, then check this week video! Transcription available below the video as well 🙂
I have included 3 exercises which you can download for FREE to get that high voice training started today!
If you’re stuck trying to reach higher notes and you never can, this video is for you. If you ever ask yourself a question, why if I keep on practicing and pushing harder, I never can reach those higher notes, I’m here to answer that in this video. So the reasons might not be what you think. Let’s get to the bottom of it.
In this video, I’m going to tell you the number one reason why you are failing to reach higher notes and how to start unlocking them easily.
Every voice is different. And so everybody has a different reason why we can’t reach higher notes. But in general, it kind of always comes back to the same thing. It means that we are not setting up the body properly for singing. So for example, we try to reach higher notes and we try to get them by pushing them. So it all starts contracting and then you start doing things with the neck (demonstration). You start sort of tensing pulling the lips back or widening the mouth like that (demonstration).
So when you’re going into that kind of posture and you’re actually closing your throat quite a bit, the larynx goes all the way up and your voice muscles don’t have the flexibility to work on pitch. So a lot of people think about higher notes and they try to go higher with the body like that. And as you do, you start losing that good singing posture that we’re looking for. So you start doing these kinds of things (demonstration).
As you can see everything is closed and the internal muscles of the larynx can’t work in a very effective way. And that’s one of the main reasons why you can’t sing higher notes.
Now, if that is you, let me know in the comments below.
Now, lemme tell you how to actually start the process of unlocking those higher notes, because let me tell you something, we all have access to a higher range. It’s not that some people have it and some people don’t, we all have access to it, but we need to know how to unlock it. And yes, for some people that process comes a little bit more easily for them and for other people it’s not but we all have access there if we train it properly.
I’ve been a vocal coach for 13 years now, I’ve taught hundreds of people and I can tell you there is no one person that doesn’t have access to that higher range once they allow that to happen.
We’re talking about unlocking the higher range. There are certain hierarchies when you do this. So in another video, I think I talk, about chest voice and head voice. So there are different kinds of voices. For example, if your tendency is to pull your chest voice to the limit (demonstration) like that’s when you start shouting and that kind of thing. And it’s very different than if you are a very reserved person, close mouth, and then you go, so your muscles work in a little, a little bit of a different way in that case.
Now, the first thing to consider when you’re trying to unlock your higher notes is that as you do it, you might not sound as powerful as you want. So just because you are starting to unlock your high notes, it doesn’t mean that you’re going to be belting a high D. And this is because when we are just starting out, it is about activating your two main pitch muscles.
So you have the TA muscle, which is predominant when we are singing things in chest voice. And then we have the CT muscle. As we call it in the singing world, that is predominant in your head voice. So in another video, we talked about this. I think we applied it to a song. But if you think of it in terms of resonance, your chest voice, if you go, ‘Hey’ (demonstration), that is your chest voice. And if you go, ‘Woo’ (demonstration), that is your head voice. So it’s a little bit different. When we work on the voice in this way to unlock higher notes, it’s kind of like going to the gym, which means you might not sound super, super powerful at the beginning, but, with the muscle training, then you’re going to get to those sounds that you want so if you want to reach high notes and your tendency is to pull your voice, sort of tense on your body and then yell, and that’s why you can’t reach higher notes. Then, you have to work a little bit more on activating your head voice, kind of like your woo resonance that we talked about in another video.
So I know what you’re thinking, ‘woo’ (demonstration), that doesn’t sound powerful, but it’s not about that. It is about just allowing you to train that muscle so you can start blending it with your chest voice. And then you start getting some nice things like a mixed voice. not sure if you’ve ever heard that, but that is what gives you powerful notes without straining.
Now, if you are interested and you are ready to give your voice the exercise that it needs, then I have something for you. If you go to the description below, you’re going to find a link. From there, you can download a little training that contains three vocal exercises for you to start unlocking your voice in a safe way today.
