how to use your body to sing easily? If you have read other articles from this blog, you will know that I see the voice as being part of our body. Any changes that we do in our body, will have an impact on our voice.
This is good news because by doing some small changes in your body you can change the way your voice sounds.
Your body will always have an effect on your voice. It is up to you if you allow it to make your singing easier or more difficult.
Usually, we tend to use our bodies in ways that don’t help our voice. Everything starts in our minds!
You have to go on stage (or even sing for one person), you start stressing about it, remembering when your choir director at school told you that you couldn’t sing, you start thinking about how awful you are going to sound, and how you won’t get the notes right, and how you won’t remember the lyrics, then you feel fear and your body reacts to that as if you were in real danger.
Your body starts switching to running away mode (fight or flight response). You want to hide, your breath becomes shallow, and your upper body is all tensed up…
This is not good news for the voice. In this particular situation, all you will be able to express is that you’re scared. It is so hard to sing freely with this body configuration and posture!
Obviously, it is not so easy to get rid of these reactions and to just relax and enjoy. It took me a long time and required transformation from deep inside to be able to do it. Hopefully, it will be easier for you than it was for me!
This is a vast topic, actually! But let’s get a glimpse of it.
You can use lots of body movements to help you unlock your voice when you are practicing at home.
There are some articles in this blog that will help you with that:
How to have a good posture for singing
How to use your breath to improve your voice
How to prepare your body to sing
And there are many more things you can do. The body is interconnected, so at some level, every part of your body is linked to your voice.
So we have established that being scared on stage doesn’t really serve your voice justice, but how can we get rid of this sensation and truly enjoy it?
First of all, the best trick I have found doesn’t require you to do any sophisticated movement.
It does require you to use your mind though! Which can usually be more difficult, but also very rewarding in the long term.
So this tip is purely to learn how to live in the moment! And I’m not talking about this year or this week, I’m talking about this very precise moment. Very often the reason why we get so stressed on stage is that we imagine what will go wrong IN THE FUTURE. Within the next hour, within the next ten minutes, or even within the next bar! All those things only exist in the future. Nothing of that is real. When they are real, they won’t be the future but only your present reality.
If you get used to being all the time in the future, you won’t even be able to enjoy your performance. The song will finish, and you would have not have been there at all and totally depersonalized.
Learn to live every word you say, enjoy them. Mean anything you say when you are singing. When you do, you will be able to relax more. If you are connected and feeling what you are saying your body will react to your feelings and words instead of to your fear, and that way your body will allow you to express and sing at ease.
You will sometimes notice that great singers don’t always stay steady on stage. It doesn’t mean that you can’t be still and be a great singer! There are tons of singers that achieve a true expression that way.
But… It is not easy for everybody. Some singers will naturally use their bodies to help their performances and that can be a great tool.
And there are no set rules for how to use your body. It is more about listening to your body and to what it needs to do right now. Some singers will bend over, bend their knees, jump, run, open their arms… all these movements help to unblock your energy and to release it through your voice.
