In this video, I answer a common singing question: Can anybody sing well with practice? Enjoy the video – transcript below!
If you wonder whether everyone can sing well if they practice, this video is for you. In this video, I’m going to explain what singing well means, how to know what areas you want to improve, and how to plan a strategy that helps you achieve your singing goals faster
Make sure you stick to the end because I have a resource that I’m going to share with you that is going to help you gain clarity on your singing goals so you can get better in no time.
Firstly, I would like to talk to you about what it means to sing well. Sadly, I need to tell you that singing well is a subjective opinion. I actually have a full video about how to differentiate facts from opinions and I will link that so you can take a look. Let me just say that different people have different opinions on what singing well means and that means all of them are right and none of them are right.
The important thing is what does it mean for you to sing well? Does it mean to sing in tune? Does it mean to have good musicality? Does it mean to be able to belt? Does it mean to sing certain styles? Does it mean to sing with a good technique or with a good note of interpretation? To know what you consider and what singing well means take a look at all the singers that you love and see what they have in common
Now, once you have decided what it means to sing well for you, then you can focus on creating a strategy that makes your singing practice more effective. So yes, with practice, anyone can sing well as long as you have some direction. If you struggle with pitch, for example, and you keep on looking on YouTube for exercises on how to practice belting, it’s not gonna do anything for you. You can practice as much as you want. But if you haven’t made the connection between the pitch and the larynx then you are not going to be able to resolve those exercises anyway, and even if you did it wouldn’t sound well because you will be singing out of tune. So it’s super important to understand where you are, and where you want to get and to develop a strategy that takes you there step by step.
That is the fastest way. And that is a sure way to make sure that your practice actually counts.
Make sure you subscribe if you are interested in this type of content because I have a lot of videos that talk about how to start the process of singing, and the journey of singing!
Now I would like to talk to you about a few strategies that you can use depending on what type of singer you want to be.
I’m going to give you three examples, but there are a lot of them. For example, if you want to be a musical theater singer, you will first have to develop a very good pitch, and you will have to develop a very strong vocal technique. You also will have to develop interpretation skills, and acting skills, and have to develop some specific stylistic elements, such as belting.
If you wanted to sing jazz, for example, you would have to pay a lot of attention to musicality. You would have to have a good pitch, you would have to learn to sing a lot of different scales, and you would have to pay a lot of attention to rhythm and phrasing. You would have to develop strong improvisation skills too. If you want to be a folk singer, then you will have to develop a strong connection with the songs that you are singing. If you want to be singing your own songs, then you will also have to develop, of course, songwriting skills, but you also will have to develop some intimacy with the songs. So every different genre that you want to sing has a different path. And of course, I am only talking about the music right now.
Of course, you’re going to have different goals when it comes to performing those songs, for some people, the goal is to sing better just for themselves. For some people, the goal is to become a professional singer, depending on the goal that you want to work towards, the strategy is going to be different and it’s very important that you match the strategy with your goal. You don’t want to have those separated, otherwise, you’re not going to go where you want to go.
As I said, I have a resource that I would like to share with you. This is my goal-setting template that you can use to set your singing goals. This is very important. If you don’t have a direction, you are not gonna get anywhere. So download this template. Go ahead, work on your goals, and once you have that, you’re gonna have a lot of clarity about where you wanna get and how to get there.
