If you are starting to learn singing you might be wondering what are the different stages of the development of a singer.
A lot of people think that learning to sing requires a couple of sessions or youtube videos. I wish it was that simple!
The development of a singer is a lifelong process. You never stop getting to know your voice!
However, there are some major changes between the main stages of the development of a singer.
At the beginning of the singing training, everybody is at a different stage. Some people need to learn to sing in tune. Some people can already identify notes easily, and they find their challenge in the way they produce the sound. It all depends on your history.
For example, usually, people who work as teachers or telemarketing have very tired voices and usually find their challenge in voice strength.
So at the beginning of the training, the main focus is on identifying the main habits in the way you use your body that are blocking your voice and to start replacing them with new good habits that will revert that process and give you a strong instrument.
This stage can take a couple of months or a couple of years. It all depends on your particular instrument now and of course on how much resistance you have to the process. How and how much you practice, but most importantly, how much you practice with awareness.
Changing the way you use your body to produce sound takes time, as it does with any habit that you want to change in yourself.
In this stage of your training, you also learn the basics of musicianship. Rhythm, melodies, basic dynamics.
You also learn foundation repertoire and interpretation techniques.
The initial phase of the singing training is very busy!
Intermediate singers have resolved pitch problems. There is much more control over the foundational techniques (posture, breathing, air support, resonance, diction).
At this level, students usually perform regularly either in the singing school events or they find their own projects to sing with.
The focus is on strengthening the mix voice, which gives you many more abilities and opens up your range and your repertoire options, as well as your interpretation skills.
At this level, students have strong musicianship. Singing in tune or knowing when to start singing a phrase on a song is no longer difficult.
Students have deeper body awareness and they usually are ready to give much more feedback as they are more in tune with their instrument.
At this level, it is also easier to start improvising more and getting more involved in the creative part of the music production process.
Some students at this level naturally start getting involved in songwriting or playing a complementary instrument such as guitar or piano.
Interpretation techniques and musicianship are more developed at this level.
Advanced singers have a deep understanding of how their bodies work to produce sound efficiently. At this level, singers keep on strengthening their vocal technique.
Students at this level develop stylistic skills as well, for their style of choice.
There is much more involvement of the singer on their own training. At this level, students usually keep on training professionally, but they are much more clear about their particular needs and collaborate much more in the process by giving much more detailed feedback and requests. The singer is much more active in the process.
Advanced singers usually choose to participate in projects such as a band project, becoming themselves vocal teachers, etc. Although some of them are quite happy to keep it as a hobby!
Some students at this level might become professional singers as well. An exciting path!
