If you’re looking to improve your singing, one simple tool can make a huge difference: the gym ball! This affordable, often overlooked item can help you unlock better posture, breath control, and vocal flexibility. Keep reading to find three singing exercises using a gym ball that you can try right now (if you have a gym ball – if not go get one 🤓!).
Singing posture is crucial, and sitting on a gym ball helps naturally align your body. Unlike a traditional chair, a gym ball activates your core muscles, engages your legs, and aligns your pelvis. This balance not only benefits your overall posture but also enhances your vocal function. Remember, a strong, functional posture is the foundation for great singing.
One of the first steps to better breath control is learning to engage your low back while breathing. Low back breathing provides deeper, more controlled breaths and naturally lowers your larynx without tension. To practice this on a gym ball, slightly roll the ball forward while keeping your ribs in place and place a hand on your low back to feel it expand. Use this motion to take in air before singing, allowing your voice to flow effortlessly.
Flexibility is another key element for singers, and coordination between the anterior (front) and posterior (back) muscles. Using the gym ball, you can stretch both sides to relieve tension, preparing your body for optimal vocal performance. Try resting your back over the ball to open up your lower back and chest, or lean forward to stretch your hamstrings and back (watch the video for a demonstration!)
These exercises are easy to incorporate into your singing routine and can make a significant difference in how your voice feels and performs. Whether you’re a beginner or more advanced, using a gym ball can enhance your vocal technique by supporting your body to work FOR your voice instead of against it!
