Singing Tips For Singers With Asthma – Empower Your Voice Today!

If you are a singer and you have asthma, I have to tell you that not only you can empower your voice, but also you can achieve better overall health through healthy singing tailored to your needs.

Watch the video (or if you prefer, read the transcript!) to find out how to improve your voice and your singing if you have asthma!

Singing Tips For Singers With Asthma

For those who don’t know me, my name is Jorgelina. I am a vocal coach, singing teacher, singer, and songwriter, and I teach in Auckland and online all over the world.  I specialize in teaching people how to sing contemporary music from a holistic and integral approach.

Today I am talking about how to improve your singing if you have asthma.

The good news is that singing will help you with asthma because it will strengthen your lungs. And it helps you balance and be more in control of the relationship between inhaling and exhaling!

Singing with asthma: the issue with breath support

So if you have asthma, you probably have some difficulty exhaling. And that is what we’re going to be working on today.

Some ways in which these can affect you are   with your  breath support. And that affects a lot of other things  in your voice, such as how the vocal cords close and, of course, your voice resonance.

So if you are a singer and you have asthma or if you have asthma and you want to improve your voice even if it’s not for singing then what we have to focus on is exhaling.

Singing with asthma: an exercise to strengthen your lungs

So I have one exercise for you today that I would love you to try. And this is an exercise that, helped me a lot with my breathing.  I don’t have asthma, but of course, we all have to improve our breathing!

And this was one of my favorite ones.  Some years ago, when I was training to be a Qigong instructor, I did a training in Qigong for breathing, and this is where I found this exercise.

So the exercise I want to show you today.    It’s an exercise that you can practice every day while you go for a walk and it goes like this:

We’re going to practice it without the singing for today to improve your exhaling capacity, which will help you with your singing as well. It  goes like this:

  1. Go for a walk

  2. Inhale in two footsteps

  3. Count how many footsteps takes you to exhale.

  4. Continue inhaling in two footsteps and exhaling in the same amount of footsteps that you counted previously.

  5. When you are ready, start increasing the number of footsteps it takes you to exhale by one footstep at a time.

So if it is comfortable for you to inhale in two footsteps and exhale in four footsteps, then you can walk your way up to five steps, then six steps. seven steps, eight steps, and so on.

Of course, start slowly! Don’t worry about doing 20 footsteps to exhale on the first day.

This is an exercise that will strengthen your exhaling capacity and your overall breathing capacity. You can do this exercise every day when you go for a walk … and if you don’t go for a walk, then it’s a really good excuse to start going for walks!  Which is also very beneficial for singing.

This, of course, is an exercise that you need to regularly practice (at least three times a week) to have results quickly. Don’t just do it once!

Integrating breath and voice

After you do this exercise,  you can train your voice with a voice warm-up right away.
