Singing can be easy if you tune your brain for it! More often than not we make singing way harder than it needs to be… when we can tune our brain to make singing naturally and easy.
And that’s what we will learn today!
Let’s talk about how to trick your brain into making singing easy!
One of the reasons why people find it hard to learn to sing is because they are trying to learn to sing in a way that tells the brain that singing is dangerous. And so when your brain is in an alarm system, you are not in a position to learn easily. And that is the same for anything you want to learn.
So the first thing is that you need to tell your brain that singing is safe. So, one of the first things you can do today is to make sure that your practice space is perceived as safe by your brain. And when I say it’s safe, I mean consciously and subconsciously.
If you are new to singing, a good thing to do is to find a place where you know you’re not going to be disturbed. And maybe if you are worried about people hearing you, choose a time to practice in which you know that there are not going to be people around. If you practice and you are constantly worried about someone hearing you, your brain is not going to be in learning mode and you are just going to be wasting your time.
Of course, it is true that as you progress and as you learn the skills, you want to go and sing in different environments. But when you are just starting out and especially when you are just learning a new skill in the voice, whatever that is, then it is much easier and much faster if you do it in a space that you perceive as safe to start with.
It seems like a lot, I know. But the thing is that if you are thirsty or hungry or if you only had like two hours of sleep, then your brain is going to be in alarm mode by default because all of those things are perceived as a threat. So all those things make a huge difference in how quickly and how well you learn a skill.
The second thing to have in mind when you want to tell your brain that singing is safe is your posture. Remember that your brain and your body are all the time communicating. If you have a posture in which you are hiding your internal organs (a ‘closed’ posture), then your brain understands you are in danger and singing is going to be much harder.
And of course, that posture, you might have it because you have been sitting at the computer all day. But, as far as the brain is concerned, you are protecting your organs, so there might be danger around you, and your voice is going to react in a not-so-useful way for you.
The other thing you can do is balance the way you distribute your body weight. If you are standing up and you are bringing most of your body weight to your heels, your brain might understand that you are kind of ready to escape. You are bringing your body weight back makes it easy to escape and your brain understands you might be in danger
Try to adopt a posture that is generally relaxed, the torso is open but not stiff, and your legs are supporting you. So that’s why it’s so important to sing standing up.
Another thing you can do to tell your brain that singing is safe is to do so through the way you breathe.
The way you breathe, tells your brain, what to do immediately if your breathing is shallow and fast like this. Your brain understands that you need to get ready to escape. And it’s very functional if you actually have to escape. But when you sing, you want to be a little bit more ‘available’.
What I would suggest is that you do the exercise of actually breathing slowly and without any noise. That is a much more relaxed breath and it’s gonna connect your voice and your brain in a very gentle way. Of course, when you’re singing songs, you have to breathe faster. But have these elements in mind, when you do your warmups and voice conditioning, to provide a safe environment for your voice that accelerates your singing training.
