In today’s video and video transcript, I show you how to improve your vocal tone by mastering your vowels! Watch the whole video and practice these exercises before you apply them to songs. It will give you a more clear tone and much more choice over how you want to sound.
Today I want to offer you a voice workout that is going to unlock a lot of different frequencies on your voice and give you control over your sound.
My name is Jorgelina, I’ve been a vocal coach for 13 years and I specialize in teaching adults how to sing contemporary music from a holistic and integral approach.
Make sure you stick to the end because at the end I’m going to show you the number one secret to unlock your voice frequencies.
Let’s get started. What we’re going to do is: we’re going to train your voice system to produce the different vowels in the most efficient way. That is going to unlock a lot of different frequencies and it’s going to help you be in control of how you want to sound for this video we are going to divide the different vowels into three big groups. . Group number one is going to be the vowels that are created by projecting the lips forward. And the second group is going to be dedicated to the vowels that we create through the different movements of the front and middle parts of the tongue. We’re going to start with the foundational vowel shape. Now I talk about this in much more detail in my upcoming singing course, which is dedicated to singers that are singing from scratch.
So you can go ahead and contact me if you are interested in that. And, but I’m just gonna give you a quick overview of that. And this is important. So the first thing we’re gonna do is we are going to create an ah sound (demonstration) in which the lips are not back. So not this (demonstration). And the jaw is nice and flexible, so not that kind of thing, not a fixed jaw and also a jaw that is somehow apart, so not (demonstration) but we’re going to try to open with generosity without going too far that you have to lock the voice.
As always in vocal technique, it’s about finding the balance, so once you get your UH, we are going to work with a family of vowels that are created from the lips. So what we are going to do is we are going to sing one note at a time and we are going to go from ‘uh’ to ‘oh’ to ‘ooh’ and through all the vowels in between only by projecting the lips forward.
Without helping the process with the jaw. So, not this (demonstration). See, my lips are not doing much and everything is done by my jaw. But this (demonstration).
so I change the vowels because my lips are being projected forward every time. So let’s just try that (demonstration).

Now, of course, if you want to practice longer, feel free to repeat the part in which I’m playing the piano or pause the video and try it in any patch that you want. It’s just to get the workout of the lips going. Alright. The second group of vows that we’re gonna work on is vows that are created by changing the tongue position.
Usually in the speaking voice, we create those vowels by bringing the lips back and closing the jaw. Something like this (demonstration).
for singing, we are going to train the tongue to do that movement for you instead of using the jaw and bringing the lips back. We’re gonna keep the lips where they are, the jaw where it is. And we are going to move the tongue primarily. Now, of course, there are gonna be some movements, some flexibility, but you shouldn’t drive the movement from there if you make sense.
All right, we’re gonna do the same process one note at a time. Take your time. If you need more time in between just pause the video whenever you want and here we go.

This exercise is great to do every day. You can just do it on any note that is comfortable for you. It’s gonna make your voice much more efficient and unlock different frequencies, so you are able to choose how to sound.
Now as I promised I will show you the number one secret to get those Frequencies going and this is the secret. It’s called rounding. So this is how it works. If you allow your vocal tract to be a little bit more rounded, you are going to be unlocking the bass frequencies of your voice.
And that is a big difference between an untrained voice and a trained voice. So that, you can start working on that from the beginning of your training. And the best way to do it, or the first step to start doing it, is by training your lip muscles. So these muscles here, tend to be a little bit not not active when we sing.
And so if we start, using them in a little bit more, what a more rounded way to sing those frequencies are going to start unlocking, you are going to be able to have a more flexible larynx, and just everything is going to work a little bit better for you. So, you can practice that with this exercise.
If you bring a finger like this, and then you draw an ‘ooh’ with the lips, and then you push the finger forward like this, and then you relax, and then again.
It seems easy, but it’s not so easy to do. So the idea is that you do that without holding the jaw. Now this is generally a little bit hard at the beginning, but with practice, you get there and all the muscles start balancing around that.
That is very important because we are all interconnected. Everything influences everything. As soon as you start, getting that into place, all the other muscles that are involved in the voice production start to be a little bit more aligned with effective singing.
If you like this exercise, go to the description below because I actually have a very gentle warm-up that you can start using right away that uses some of these vowels, but also has very slow scales that you can also apply to these different vowel shapes that you learned today.
