Do you love your voice? A lot of times people tell me things like:
-“My voice is terrible”
-“ I would never be able to sing”
-“ I don’t know why my voice sounds so awful”
I remember a friend that was studying singing in the past and he could not improve even if he took regular weekly lessons.
Every time we had a conversation he would tell me terrible things about his voice and at the same time mention how frustrated he was because it didn’t sound the way he wanted it to. And every time I would imagine a person treating their child or their pet unkindly and expecting them to be free and happy at the same time… it just doesn’t make sense.
Your voice is not only a part of you, it is also a reflection of your emotions… if you hate it, it won’t get any better!
Learn to love your voice. Treat it with love, care, and compassion, just as you would treat anybody and anything that you love.
Do you take care of your voice just as you would take care of anyone you love? Be aware of the things that are affecting it: alcohol, smoke, late nights, not enough water, too much coffee, too much stress…
I think that the first step if you want to improve your voice, even if it is not for singing, is to learn to love, accept, and respect it. Acknowledge the things that it is telling you about yourself, and maybe even learn from it…
Most of the students and singers I know, have told me that they hate listening to themselves in recordings… why would you think that? Why would you ever be embarrassed by your own lovely voice? That won’t make you have a better sound, it will probably block it even more. If you do, try to listen to yourself from a different point of view, without judgment. Give your voice the chance to flourish.
I had a singing teacher once that told me that being humble is not only not thinking that you are above others but also not thinking that you are below others. She would make us look straight forward when we sing so that we would be centered and we wouldn’t be tilting our head up or down.
I still use this exercise with all my students, since it not only gives you humbleness in regards to your voice (which improves your singing by itself), but it also frees your neck from tensions.
The neck connects the mind and body, that’s one of the reasons why singing is so good for improving expression and communication. But it also means that for good, healthy, and free singing, you need a neck free from tensions.
So, if you are one of those that say or think nasty things about their own voice, try to stop those thoughts and observe how your voice starts to flow more easily… from there you can start to make improvements. Be kind and gentle with your voice and with your body, and you will see the rewards! If you want to love your voice, don’t judge it. Care about it! love it unconditionally. It is there at your service, showing you what is happening inside.
