Many students often tell me that they practice singing in the car while driving, either because they don’t have any other free time, or because they don’t have a space where they can sing without people around.
There are benefits but also risks from this type of practice when you’re training your voice seriously, but if you do it properly it can help you.
Singing is an activity that requires you to be completely present. Why? Because the muscles we use for singing are not completely voluntary, at least not like a bicep or a hamstring — we are not as used to observing them or working on them. Our whole lives, we have been building habits more related to survival than singing, for example (among many other examples), using a high breathing instead of a low one.
In order to use our body properly for healthy singing, we must build the right habits and it does take a lot of awareness and practice, which requires being present and being disciplined.
When we practice singing in the car, we certainly cannot be 100% present because we must pay attention to many other things. If you practice without 100% awareness, you will still be building bad habits instead of good ones, more than likely.
But there are still things you can do in the car that will help you save time when you are studying singing, without affecting your technique very much.
