If you want to learn to sing better but you don’t know where to start, this video is for you because that was all of us when we first started.
My name is Jorgelina, I’m a singer, vocal coach, and songwriter.
In this video, I’m going to talk about why is it hard to sing without training, how to develop a strong instrument with your voice, and of course, how to get started to become the singer that you want.
Stick around until the end because I’m going to share with you a resource that you can use to get your singing started.
Point number one. Why is it hard to sing without training?
Okay. This is a very controversial one. A lot of people spend a lot of time, a lot of years sometimes just trying to learn to sing by themselves because they say, okay, I have a voice so I should be able to sing. Singing like your favorite singers usually requires a lot of flexibility and fine-tuning for your voice muscles. Now your voice muscles are not directly voluntary. When we try to learn to sing without proper training what we are doing is we are usually trying to copy what other singers do by using external muscles and that usually creates an imbalance in the vocal muscles and that is why singing is so hard.
It makes you go out of pitch. It just damages your voice because you are overpressing the vocal cords and of course, without a flexible voice, you don’t have access to a lot of stylistic resources that you see in most singers.
On top of that as we grow we usually develop habits postural habits and breathing habits that affect our voice negatively and if we don’t have the help of someone who is looking at us, then we don’t really notice those habits.
In order to learn to sing better, I’m going to give you two things that you can work on today, and if you work on this too I promise that you’re better, your singing is going to get better in no time.
The first one of them is to have a plan. A lot of times I get singers who are just starting in my lessons and they come to their first lesson telling me that they spent hours and hours looking at YouTube videos and Didn’t get anything out of them. Well, yes, that is possible. And yes, this is a YouTube channel. But as much as we do our best to provide valuable resources, the thing is that all these videos that you see don’t necessarily have an order. Usually people go to YouTube and look for things to like: ‘How to belt’ and ‘How to sing high notes’ and things like that. And while those videos are very useful, when you are just starting, you need to start from the very beginning.
And sometimes I find that people look a video here and there and they mix methods. Maybe they are just starting and they look for videos on how to do something advanced. So basically the reason why you’re not learning from YouTube if you’re a complete beginner is because you don’t know where to start. When you are a trained singer, the more you know, the more you know your instrument, the more you have control over it and the more useful the content that you see on YouTube is.
Of course, there are a lot of valuable resources and materials that you can find on YouTube, but the more you are in control of your instrument, the more you are familiar with it, the more you can control it in a way, the more useful they are going to be.
So what you need to do is you need to develop a plan.
A lot of times singing students come and they know they want to sing, but they don’t know what singers they like, they don’t know what songs they like, they don’t know how they want to sound they don’t know what type of singer you want to be. And yes, even though of course the plans change it is much easier to learn to sing better and much faster if you have some clear goals at the end. I’m going to give you a resource to be able to do that
So the first point is learning to develop a plan so you have some direction, you have something to work towards.
The second thing I would suggest if you want to learn to sing better is to start developing a coherent instrument. This is what I mean. If you want to be a great singer and you want to learn to sing better your instrument has to have coherence between the music, the vocal technique, and the interpretation.
These are three different aspects of singing, and usually, they are not too aligned. And what do I mean by this? Many times singers come with a song as a beginner, they come with a song that is super hard and that hard doesn’t necessarily mean super high notes. Sometimes it has to be with the range, but sometimes it has to be with the music.
Sometimes they bring a song that has a lot of changes of keys or they have a lot of chromatisms. Or a lot of notes that are outside the key. Those things are hard to sing if you haven’t been trained as a musician. Or maybe for example you are bringing songs that have a lot of very quick melismas. or flips, changes of registers, and things like that. There are so many things that can make a song hard. And that doesn’t mean that the song is impossible for you.
That just means that we have to break it down.
You need to work on your music, on your pitch, on your rhythm. You need to work on your vocal technique, and you need to work on your interpretation. Ideally, you will be working on these three aspects in a holistic manner.
So, for example, if you are a complete beginner and you like pop, for example, you won’t be, you won’t be taking the hardest song in the world. You won’t be starting with Michael Jackson. You are going to probably take a song that is closer to what you can do right now. And you will align these three aspects of singing around that.
Now if this sounds right for you then I have a resource for you as I promised at the beginning of the video go to the description below and you’re going to find a link to my goal settings template for singers this template is going to help you identify your singing purpose, your singing goals.
And if you don’t know the difference, download the template because everything is there. Once you have your goals, then you can plan a strategy to get to your goal. For example, if your goal is to sing, a specific song, like ‘Unchained melody’. Once you have decided that, you can assess how hard it is to do by yourself and you can assess as part of your strategy.
You can assess who will be helping you, who will be guiding you, how to break down the song, how your training has to be to get to that song in that year, and so on.
