If you had to force your voice for any reason, you might be wondering how to get your voice back. Keep on reading because I have a great solution for you today!
Welcome to my first ever, ‘What did I learn about singing last month’ edition. I intend to keep this as a monthly thing because I’m always researching and trying things with my voice and I’m always discovering new things and I would like to share them with you.
What I learned last month has to do about getting your voice back after a day of forcing your voice (screaming, singing too much, speaking too much, etc).
Last month it was August of 2023 and it was winter in New Zealand. Of course, I got sick and had some singing things to do. I came back to singing when my voice wasn’t fully recovered and as a result, I had to force my voice a little bit, which my voice didn’t like.
So what I discovered this month is something that actually I knew, but I didn’t dare to do before as I thought it would not be a good idea:
When you have lost a little bit of your voice, actually, it might be a good idea to do some gentle singing after that as part of your recovery. Now, don’t panic. I’ll explain soon what I mean by this.
This is, of course, if you are not sick right now, but if you forced your voice a little bit and you need to bring it back to health.
This is the thing. When you want to know how get your voice back, it is a really good idea to sing some sounds and some scales that are designed to improve the vocal closure. Basically, the way the vocal cords close to each other to sound. Now, if you work on making this process efficient and gentle, then that is going to help you get your voice back.
So what I would recommend for this process is not to sing songs the day that you want to recover, but sing with vowels because they keep your vocal tract open and it’s much more gentle for your voice. So a good sound to work on if you want to get your voice back is the ‘ooh’ sound. It is a gentle sound and it also helps you close the vocal course a little bit better in a gentle way.
A lot of times your voice is hoarse, and it can be because of lack of hydration or also because maybe you have compressed your vocal cords a little bit too much, like yelling or singing too much, or just compressing your voice more than you need it. And so something that you can do is you can do some gentle slides with an uh sound and you do it from a range that is not too high, but also not too low. Make sure you sing in your comfortable range when you are trying to get a ‘voice massage’. Leave range expansion exercises for when your voice is fully back! Sing those slides in a descendant way. Watch the video for a demonstration!
And of course, if you are recovering from voice abuse or sickness, then be very well-hydrated. That’s the main thing. Not only singing, but also getting the voice what it needs, and it needs to be hydrated.
I actually have a resource for you if you are recovering from illness or from voice abuse.
Find below the link to a voice warmup session that is designed to bring your voice back to safety. Just make sure you are well-hydrated before you do it and you’re going to be fine.
